Key takeaways
- USPS recommends mailing First-Class holiday cards by December 17, 2026 for delivery before December 25 in the lower 48 states.
- About one in three U.S. small businesses sends winter holiday cards, typically 50 to 99 of them, according to Greeting Card Association research.
- Thanksgiving and New Year cards arrive in a quieter mailbox than December cards and avoid most religious-holiday assumptions.
- A signed, specific line about the client's year does more than a printed logo card; plan the list and message before November.
Holiday cards are the one mailing almost every client expects and few businesses execute well. The cards that get remembered arrive on time, carry a line written for that person, and come from someone who also stayed in touch the other eleven months. This guide covers the 2026 mailing dates, which holiday to choose, what to write, and what a client list of 150 actually costs to mail.
Why holiday cards still matter
The Greeting Card Association's small-business study estimates that close to two million U.S. small businesses send roughly 150 million cards each winter holiday season. That means two things: your clients expect to hear from the businesses they value, and a generic card competes with a lot of other mail.
Personal mail also gets attention. In the USPS Household Diary Study, mail from businesses people already know is read far more often than prospecting mail. And research covered by Chicago Booth Review found that people who express gratitude consistently underestimate how happy and surprised the recipient feels. A short thank-you lands better than most senders expect.
Pick your holiday: Thanksgiving, December, or New Year
| Card | Arrives | Strengths | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Thanksgiving | Week of November 16 | Quiet mailbox, gratitude theme fits any business, no religious assumptions | Must be planned in October |
| December holidays | First half of December | Expected, festive, easy to pair with a gift | The most crowded mailbox of the year |
| New Year | Last days of December to early January | Stands out, pairs with a year-in-review or market update | Feels late if it lands after mid-January |
Many relationship businesses pick one primary card and add the others over time. If your list already gets a December card from you, a Thanksgiving thank-you is an easy way to stand apart. Real estate agents often pair the December card with a home anniversary card program so the holiday card isn't the only touch of the year.

What to write in a business holiday card
The printed greeting can be universal. The handwritten or personalized line is what earns attention. Reference something real: their move, their policy anniversary, their kids, a project you finished together.
Wishing you and your family a warm and happy holiday season. Working with you this year was a highlight for our whole team. Thank you for your trust, and here's to a great year ahead.
This Thanksgiving, we're grateful for clients like you. Thank you for the opportunity to help this year. We hope your table is full and your week is restful.
Happy holidays from our team. We hope your first holiday season on Maple Street is full of good food and good company. If there's ever anything we can do for you or your neighbors, we're a call away.
Season's greetings, and thank you for trusting us with what matters most to your family. If anything changes in the new year, a new car, a new home, a new baby, let us know and we'll make sure you're covered.
Happy New Year. Thank you for being part of our year. We look forward to staying in touch in the year ahead.
For more message ideas you can adapt, see our guide on what to write in a closing card and our client birthday card messages.
- Use a greeting everyone can receive. Say "Merry Christmas" only to clients you know celebrate it.
- Sign it, or use a handwriting-style signature. A printed logo with no name looks like an ad.
- Leave out the sales pitch. A business card insert is fine. A rate sheet is not.
- Add a personal line for your top 20%. It's where most of the effect comes from.
- Mail in one wave. A card that arrives December 23 gets buried.
Holiday cards and the rules
Holiday cards themselves rarely raise compliance questions, but anything you send with them can.
- Tax deduction. IRS Publication 463 limits the business gift deduction to $25 per recipient per year, and incidental costs like packaging and mailing don't count toward that limit. Ask your tax professional how to treat cards and gifts. Our post on whether closing gifts are tax deductible covers the details for agents.
- Real estate referral partners. A card is generally fine. The CFPB's RESPA FAQs say promotional items must not be conditioned on referrals. See our RESPA gift rules guide.
- Insurance and Medicare clients. Gifts that accompany a card may be limited by state anti-rebating laws and, for Medicare, CMS nominal-value rules. See can insurance agents give gifts to clients and Medicare agent gift rules.
What 150 holiday cards cost
On the Basic plan, 50 greeting cards a month are free and extra cards are 99 cents each, so the same 150 cards cost $99 for the 100 extra cards plus $123 in postage, or $222. At retail with no membership, cards are $1.99 each. Current prices are on the pricing page.
After the holidays: keep going
A holiday card works best as one touch in a year of them. Map birthdays, home or policy anniversaries, and a few useful mailers into a 12-month client touchpoint calendar, and the December card becomes a reminder of a relationship rather than the whole relationship.
Next steps
Pick your holiday, clean the list this month, and mail Thanksgiving cards by November 13 or December cards by December 10. Then pair the card with client appreciation gifts for your top clients and a year-round appreciation plan.

Frequently asked questions
When should I send holiday cards to clients?
For delivery before December 25, USPS recommends sending First-Class Mail by December 17, 2026 in the contiguous U.S. Many businesses aim for the first two weeks of December so cards arrive before the rush. Thanksgiving cards should arrive the week before Thanksgiving, which falls on November 26, 2026.
Should business holiday cards say Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays?
Use a specific greeting only when you know the client celebrates it. For a broad client list, 'Happy holidays,' 'Season's greetings,' a Thanksgiving thank-you, or a New Year card works for everyone.
Are holiday cards to clients tax deductible?
Business gifts are capped at a $25 deduction per recipient per year under IRS Publication 463, and incidental costs such as packaging and mailing aren't counted toward that cap. Ask your tax professional how your holiday cards and any gifts should be classified.
How many clients should get a holiday card?
Everyone you have done business with and want to hear from again: past clients, active clients, and close referral partners. The Greeting Card Association study found the median small business sends 50 to 99 cards.
